After three years of delivering results together, Johnston calls on Denver to keep moving forward Pushing for 20,000 new homes and universal child care, Johnston says “People often think that hope drives
change. But in Denver, we know that change drives hope”
DENVER – Mayor Mike Johnston today announced his campaign for a second term, launching a grassroots movement to build on Denver’s progress over the past three years and keep moving the city forward. The campaign kickoff included the release of a video, outlining the Mayor’s vision for a second term.
Throughout the Day, Johnston will meet with everyday Denverites to discuss the work ahead. This includes his plans to provide universal childcare for every family, grow small businesses and create jobs, improve our parks and public spaces, make housing more affordable, improve community safety, and keep Denver moving forward.
Since taking office in 2023, Johnston has focused on solving the city’s toughest challenges, delivering results that make a difference in people’s lives, and fighting every day for all Denver residents. His campaign will prioritize continuing that work – building on what has been accomplished, tackling the challenges that remain, and delivering a Denver that is stronger, more affordable, and full of opportunity for all.
“I’m proud of the work we’ve accomplished together, and I know the work is not done,” the Mayor said. “Too many Denverites still worry about how they will pay the rent or pay for childcare and too many people still need a safe place to sleep tonight. That’s why in the next four years, we’re going to build 20,000 homes people can afford to rent or own. That’s why we’re going to bring childcare for all to Denver, from birth to
kindergarten. That’s why we’re going to help people still living on our streets get the housing, treatment, and jobs they need.”
Under Mayor Johnston’s leadership, Denver has made significant progress on some of the city’s most pressing challenges – reducing street homelessness and crime, reopening downtown, expanding opportunities for young people and workers, supporting small businesses, and investing in housing and neighborhoods.
Since taking office in 2023, some of Mayor Johnston’s biggest accomplishments include:
- Reducing street homelessness more than any city in the country and supporting the transition of 8,200 people from the streets into shelter or housing
- Reopening 16th Street after three years of construction, achieving 90% of pre-pandemic foot traffic and speeding Downtown’s recovery.
- Delivering historic declines in homicide – down 54% over three years – and auto theft – down 60% over three years
- Delivering more than 6,000 income-restricted housing units, making rents more affordable
- Confronting an historic migrant crisis by welcoming 40,000 newcomers with coats, food and compassion
- Launching the Denver Jobs Agenda, which will help create 10,000 jobs over the next three years
- Helping bring the Denver Summit, the city’s first professional women’s team, to Denver and fighting to keep the Broncos in the city
“People often think that hope drives change. But in Denver, we know that change drives hope,” Mayor Johnston said. “Denver is still the home of the open frontier, a place where when times get hard, we solve problems by turning towards each other, not on each other. That’s the Denver we’re building together. And that’s why I’m asking for your vote to help us finish the job we started together.”
The Johnston campaign will be joined by supporters and community members later today in a kickoff rally in Denver. Media interested in attending should email [email protected].
