“As Mayor, he will represent the members of Local 7 and all the hard-working people in Colorado with their best interests in mind.”
The United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) Local 7, which represents more than 27,000 members in Colorado and Wyoming, announced their endorsement of Mike Johnston in Denver’s mayoral race, applauding his commitment to Denver workers and his strong record of delivering results for working Denverites.
“Throughout his career, Mike Johnston has been a reliable partner for working people,” said Kim Cordova, UFCW Local 7 President and Vice President of UFCW International. “Whether it was in the State Senate, where he fought against ‘Right to Work’ legislation, or his leadership at Gary Community Ventures, where he passed landmark ballot measures that helped working Coloradans, Mike is a proven leader who supports and defends workers. We are confident that as Mayor, he will represent the members of Local 7 and all the hard-working people in Colorado with their best interests in mind.”
Throughout his entire career, Mike has been a fierce advocate for workers across Colorado. In the State Senate, he regularly championed pro-worker legislation and consistently earned a 100% pro-labor ranking from the Colorado AFL-CIO. After leaving the Senate, Mike joined Gary Community Ventures, a local foundation, and built broad coalitions to successfully deliver on some of working Denverites’ top priorities, including universal pre-school and funding for affordable housing statewide.
“I’m honored to have the endorsement of UFCW Local 7,” said Mike Johnston. “The essential workers of UFCW served Denver tirelessly throughout COVID, ensuring we had food on the table when many of us were locked at home. Denver is a uniquely vibrant city, thanks in no small part to the members of UFCW 7 and their service to our city every day. But the truth is, Denver’s workers are facing incredible challenges, from skyrocketing housing costs that prevent people from living in the city they serve, to rising crime and violence in the workplace that puts our frontline workers at risk. Our campaign is about implementing bold, detailed plans to tackle these challenges head-on, and I look forward to working together to make Denver a city that works for everyone.”
Today’s endorsement comes as prominent Denver leaders, including former Mayor Federico Peña, former Speaker Terrance Carroll, and former Senate President Peter Groff, announce their support of Mike.
